The last rain

The rain poured heavily that evening, drenching the streets and muffling the sounds of the bustling city. Aanya stood under the dim glow of a streetlamp, her umbrella forgotten in her hand. Across from her, Aarav looked at her with eyes that held the weight of a thousand unsaid words.

“We can’t keep doing this,” Aanya whispered, her voice trembling. The words felt foreign, like they belonged to someone else. Aarav’s jaw tightened, his hands clenched into fists at his sides. He didn’t want to lose her, but he knew she was right.

Their love had been magical once—filled with stolen glances, shared dreams, and laughter that echoed through the quiet nights. But somewhere along the way, life had pulled them in different directions. Aanya’s career demanded late nights and endless travel, while Aarav yearned for stability and a home they could build together. The cracks had started small but grew into chasms neither could bridge.

“I thought we’d figure it out,” Aarav said softly, his voice breaking. “I thought love was enough.”

Aanya’s tears mixed with the rain streaming down her face. She wanted to believe him, but deep down she knew they were holding onto something that was slipping away. “I love you,” she admitted, her voice barely audible over the storm. “But sometimes love isn’t enough.”

Aarav stepped closer, his hand reaching out to brush a stray strand of wet hair from her face. “I’ll always love you,” he said, his voice heavy with sorrow.

For a moment, they stood there in silence, their hearts breaking in unison as the rain fell around them like nature’s tears. Aanya stepped back, her feet hesitant but resolute. “Goodbye, Aarav,” she whispered.

As she turned to walk away, Aarav called out one last time. “Wait.” She paused but didn’t turn around. He continued, his voice shaking. “Promise me you’ll be happy.”

Aanya nodded through her tears and disappeared into the rain-soaked night. Aarav stood there under the streetlamp until the rain stopped, clutching onto the memory of their last goodbye—their love now a bittersweet chapter etched into their souls forever.
