Well we had posts about the origin and the history of Valentine's Day, and whatever way this date was marked on our calendars, be it for nostalgic and idylilc reasons such as the pries who secretly performed the wedding cerimonies back at Roman Empire age, or by post card companies, or other economic reasons, what truly matters is the meaning and how we celebrate this date.
I did some digging and found some interesting, beautiful, outrageuos ways people around the world celebrate Valentine's day. Most countries celebrate it on February 14th, but in some countries it's celebrated on a different way:

  1. Brazil: Well here in Brazil we celebrate Valentine's Day on June 12th. The reasons are purely economic. Big food chain companies, gift card companies, flower companies etc... saw how much the American market profited during Valentine's Day and then decided to invest on the holy day. But in February we already have the biggest holy day of all which is Carnaval (Carnival or Mardi Gra), and the main concept of this holy day goes against the monogamic and romantic ideals of Valentine's Day. So the date was changed to June 12th, a low season of tourism in many cities and states, and we celebrate only with our loved ones, boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands, wives, rarely with friends. And anything and everything counts, from expensive romantic dinners to a simple flower bouquet.
  2. Japan: This is the one I classified as outrageuos. The date is celebrated in Japan on February 14th just like in most countries, since the year of 1936 when a chocolate company started the tradition. Nothing new there right? Well except for the way that it's celebrated. In Japan the "obligation" of giving away gifts is the woman's responsability, and it has to be chocolate and only their partners can get it. No family members or friends are included, only husdands and boyfriends.
  3. Italy: It's also celebrated on February 14th and the italian people celebrated with a tad more of style. Banquets are served, and they usually exchange flowers, cards and chocolates as well.
  4. United Kingdom: For this one I invite you users that are registered on our forum to correct or to complete the informations I found during my research :) The date is also celebrated on February 14th and people exchange gifts, and among them keys and locks in the shape of hearts.
This is the list I found, feel free to post about how you celebrate it in your country :) and also feel free to add any informantion you find interesting about the topic :)

In the UK we men line up like lambs to the slaughter at card shops, gift shops, flower shops and perfume shops hoping our token of esteem to the recipient is greeted with enough bewilderment for them to apply the red lippy and have an early luncheon on our truncheon .. see told you us Brits are romantic !!!!!
