Brazil was an undeniable powerhouse in world football but what went wrong?? after 3 successive final entries in 1994,1998,2002 brazilian football witnessed a massive downfall. from 2002-2024 5 worldcups have taken place and the best performance of brazil in these 5 campaigns was 2014 worldcup they managed to go through quarter finals and got knocked out by germany for a huge and disgraceful margin of 7-1.
other than this brazil always took an early exit in quarter finals.
Reasons are many, not just 1 transition of modern football is one of the reason for the downfall lets just look at the star studded squad of 2006, it was arguably the most scariest 11 of all time imagine playing against ronaldo(r9),ronaldinho,kaka,roberto carlos,cafu,adriano,robbinho...... litreally everyone out there was a superstar material.despite being the scariest 11 this was the greatest ever disappointment as they fell short to zidanes france in quarterfinals
during this time european football was on a transition state of more tactical based play whereas brazil was relying on their trademark flair football (jogobonito) it was a effective during 2002 worldcup framed by strong tactical system by their legendry manager luiz philpe scholari, coming on to 2006 the manager carlos alberto wasnt able to create such a system also most of the stars was past their prime years and i believe its one of the reasons too.
coming on to 2010 brazil didnt have the best of the squads yet they had big names of kaka, robinho, dani alves and by this time european football was dominating the football world and brazil didnt had much to do another quarter final exit vs netherlands spain went on to win the worldcup establishing tikki-taka as their identity
2014 : again brazil had an average squad but the expectations was sky high it was a home worldcup and all eyes were on one specific player yes "neymar jr" he was simply outrageous and magical, holding the ball and dribbling past 3-4 players.... he was such a treat a true generational talent and yes he delivered as expected but this time injuries killed brazilian hopes. the veteran cb thiago silva was injured and neymar took a nasty blow to his vertebrae which almost ended his football career but he bounced back better than ever. but for the unavailability of neymar and silva brazil had to deal with a heartbreaking 7-1 defeat against germany
2018: by this time neymar was the talisman of brazil and brazil had a better squad comparatively than the past worldcups brazil played good football in this worldcup but wasnt able to go past belgium in quarterfinals .i still remember the final 20 minutes of this game with brazil portraying their jogabonito by the constant attacks of douglas costa neymar and phil coutinho but brazil wasnt lucky enough to find a goal which resulted in their exit
2022: this was arguably the most star studded squad of brazil in a while with likes of neymar, vini jr,rodrygo, casemiro, thiago silva and marquinhos expectations was sky high neymar wasnt available for couple of matches but still brazil managed to reach quarter finals where they had a shootout lose against modrics croatia.neymar broke the deadlock in the 105th minute with a typical neymar goal but a tactical error of brazilian manager backfired for brazil and croatia was able to score back and brazil suffered a lose in penalties. this worldcup had a speciality of leo messi lifting the worldcup arguably ending the goat debate
