I have been living by this conception after going through lots of shit in life when I was a teenager just trying to fit in. I tell my son every day that who we really are is the most important thing in the world, and that we should value that. The right people will be in your life and the ones who try to change you may all rott in hell. Being yourself and being happy in your own skin is the best feeling ever.
