The main reason is to avoid the meat during the Tamil month of Purattasi, the rays of the sun weaken and the rains set in. The earth that has heated up in the previous months, soak in the rain and is known to give out heat, which is considered hurtful than the summer heat.
It is also believed that the digestion power of individuals is low and there is chance it can take a toll on our digestive system. Hence people avoid consuming meat.
The scientific reason is during the month of Purattasi, the rainy season starts at Southern India and there is a sudden climatic change which causes more heat than the heat caused in summer. This leads to various health problems. That is the primary reason why non-veg have been avoided. Many people don't know the exact science behind this.

This month was fixed according to the climate change of Tamil Nadu.if you are in other state or country ,you no need to bother about this .Hence the climate conditions are different from each place.:p:Like:

Purattasi Tamil month mostly comes and observed during Mid September to Mid October.

This is not for all Hindus but for Tamils in Tamil Nadu. In Kerala people observe it in the month of Aadi.

The concept is exactly the same. In TN, they observe it two months later because the monsoons arrive in TN two months later than in Kerala.

This Purattasi month is Kanni masam of Kerala.

In Kerala, the month before the previous month, that is of Aadi in TN or Karkitakam is when people observe abstinence from meat and read Ramayanam. We call it the Ramayana masam.

I will explain why this practice is

The monsoon arrives in Kerala in Aadi maasam. Due to the rains and lack of Sun, the hygiene required for slaughter cannot be maintained. The fishes are not caught due to rough seas. So, people stick to a light and easy diet. We make Ramayana masam kanji.

In TN they follow the same. But since the rains arrive later, they observe later.
