The Quran admonishes those men who oppress or ill-treat women:
“
O you who believe! You are forbidden to inherit women against their will. Nor should you treat them with harshness, that you may take away part of the dowry you have given them - except when they have become guilty of open lewdness. On the contrary live with them on a footing of kindness and equity. If you take a dislike to them, it may be that you dislike something and Allah will bring about through it a great deal of good." [ Quran Chapter 4: Verse 19]
“O you who believe! You are forbidden to inherit women against their will. Nor should you treat them with harshness,-- It's explicitly clear and you have misinterpreted it.
Considering the fact that before the advent of Islam the pagan Arabs used to bury their female children alive, make women dance naked in the vicinity of the Ka'bah during their annual fairs, and treat women as mere chattels and objects of sexual pleasure possessing no rights or position whatsoever, these teachings of the of the Noble Quran were revolutionary. Unlike other religions, which regarded women as being possessed of inherent sin and wickedness and men as being possessed of inherent virtue and nobility, Islam regards men and women as being of the same essence created from a single soul.
Islam is a practical faith that permits self-defence in certain strict situations. Among the most often cited verses is this one: “And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give Zakah, let them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. (Quran 9:5).
To understand this passage, we must take into account the historical circumstances at the time of its revelation.
The “polythiests” (Arabic:
mushrikeen) were those Meccan “pagans” who had declared war against Muhammad and his community. The Meccan oligarchs fought against the Prophet’s message from the very beginning. When they realized that the flow of converts to Islam was increasing, they resorted to violent oppression and torture of the Prophet and his followers. The Prophet himself survived several assassination attempts,
The Prophet Muhammad and his companions patiently bore vehement persecution in Mecca for nearly 13 years. This included a three-year starvation boycott from which his wife Khadija later died. Muslims didn’t fight back.
It became so dangerous for the Muslims in Mecca that Muhammad sent some of his companions who lacked tribal protection to take asylum in the
Christian kingdom of Abyssinia. After 13 years of violence, he himself was compelled to take refuge in the city of Medina, and even then the Meccans did not relent in their hostilities. Eventually, various hostile Arab tribes joined in the fight against the Muslims, culminating in the Battle of the Trench, when 10,000 soldiers from many Arab tribes gathered to wipe out the Muslim community once and for all. As we know, the Muslims survived these challenges and eventually went on to establish a vast civilization.
At the time Verse 9:5 was revealed, Muhammad and his followers had begun to establish themselves securely. They had returned triumphantly to Mecca without violence, most Meccans themselves had become Muslims, and many of the surrounding pagan Arab tribes had also accepted Islam and sent delegations to the Prophet pledging their allegiance to him. Those that did not establish peace with the Muslims were these remaining hostile forces that the verse commands the Prophet to fight.
The verses that come immediately before 9:5 state, “Those with whom you have treaties are immune from attack.” It further states, “Fulfill your treaties with them to the end of their term, for God loves the righteous.” Now, in its proper context, verse 9:5 can be properly understood.
This was a guidance to the Prophet at that specific time to fight those idolaters who, as 9:4 mentions, violated their treaty obligations and helped others fight against the Muslims. The permission given in
Quran 22:40-41 to fight was only given to “those against whom war is waged.”
Additionally,
Quran 2:193-194 declares that Muslims may only fight active combatants. Meaning, even if during battle an enemy combatant asks for amnesty, you must grant it. In Islam, there’s no such thing as “collateral damage,” mutilation, or torture
It is not a general command to attack all non-Muslims, and it has never signified this to the overwhelming majority of Muslims throughout history. Had it been so, then every year, after the “sacred months are past,” (The “sacred months” are four months out of the year during which fighting is not allowed) history would have witnessed Muslims attacking every non-Muslim in sight. This yearly slaughter never occurred. Though the present verse is only one example, none of the Quranic verses that mention fighting justify aggression nor propose attacking anyone because of their religious beliefs. Nor were forced conversions recognized as valid under Islamic law.
For an Apostasy, a Person who is a muslim and becomes a non-muslim ,in Islam there are many cases it does not mean death penalty.
There were cases in which from the companions, The Prophet told, this person who was a muslim became a non-muslim kill him. One of the Companion says, “ Oh Prophet he is my relative please let him go”. The Prophet agrees. So compulsory death penalty is not there. So if a person who converts to non muslim and propagates the state and speaks against Islam and if it is an Islamic rule, then the person is put to death. Just because a person who is a muslim and becomes a non-muslim, death penalty is not the ruling. But if a person in an Islamic State of law which follows Quran and Sunnah i.e constitution is Quran or Islamic State. There is not any country in this world which is 100% Islamic or which follows Islamic law. Not even Saudi Arabia.
Islam itself is an state. Leaving it is considered as an act of treason. In general terms, what is the punishment for betraying a country? It is punishable by death. However this rule applies only in an Islamic Country with Islamic law
The instructions the Quran gives to believers? This is indeed a very important distinction.
Give me one Unequivocal statement or any unambiguous statement in Quran that forces marriage, female gentile mutilation, domestic violence, the treatment of practicing homosexuals, the treatment of women, or simply the fact that anyone that wanted to leave the faith was at risk of death.
Misconceptions about Islam creep in because people learn about the faith from headline news and the internet rather than from the Quran and the Prophet.
I am positive you must have done your search on the web rather than reading the texts. The above quoted statement from the Quran 9:5 was taken out of context. To understand this passage, we must take into account the historical circumstances at the time of its revelation. Then again I would suggest you to Read it from the proper source, not the misquoted or doctored ones.
