The price of being born a woman

I think that this is one of the toughest things in the world to be, it doesn't matter where you're born, if you're born a woman, well you'll sure go through some hell in some parts of your life, if not in the whole thing.

Many people think we get all things easy, that everything is handed to us, that we not even for a moment face any problem because we are women. Well I ask you now to think again, look around and let's reflect on it.

In China if a woman gives birth to a daughter, the couple by law has the right to try for another child and hopefully it will be a boy/ the boys carry family names, as for the girls... well, they're meant to get good marriage contracts. In most cases it's allowed for the couple to abort the baby when gender is determined, and most girls are abandoned in orphanages and most spend their lives in those places, never having a chance to have an actual family. Still think it's easy being a woman?

In most middle east countries and and countries that have a more radical Muslim religion, women suffer female flagellation between the ages of 11-14 so they can be offered in marriage and be considered more valuable to their future spouses. This kind of procedure happens mostly in small villages where the power of law and government can't really reach. Then their clitoris is removed by the elder of the village, with no sanitation, rituals are performed to celebrate, and then the girl is offered in marriage. Still think it's easy being a woman? This practice happens until this day, and many countries still defend that kind of procedure by law.

Let's go back in time a little bit, around the 40's and 50's many western countries allowed the female portion of the population to wear bikinis with more cleavage and showing more skin, but in many other countries women were in fact arrested for daring to decide what to wear. As for voting, well, it took women around the globe a long time to being able to do that, to be precise it was a process that lasted between the years of 1890 and 1994 for most women around the globe to vote for their representatives.

Until the 1920's when the world met the great Coco Channel, female fashion was also decided by men, they designed our clothes, perfumes, jewelry, and even though corsets are beautiful and sexy as well, they were designed to be made so tight that women actually fainted due to lack of oxygen because their lungs were obstructed by the corsets. Coco Channel invaded the world of fashion, creating clothes that were actually comfortable for women.

The 60's were amazing, the years of reckless freedom, of burning bras and of women getting bolder, questioning more and defying patriarchy. Many men and believe me other women, thought of all of this to be unnatural. We women are expected to be soft, quiet and delicate, we're expected to be like flowers, but here's the thing if we don't fight, if we don't speak up, we'll get crushed by the tide of sexist men that still think we're below them. Women were arrested, beaten, offended, it's like we have no place that seems rightfully ours anywhere we go, and that is false and that is wrong.

Women are expected to cook, to want to married, to want to have kids, as much as they're expected to be not working moms, the famous stay at home moms, our lives are determined even before we're born, we're taught our bodies should look like in a way, that our hairs are not pretty, that makeup is our best friend. Some can say that same happens to men, but hey guys are not as judged as we are.

We can vote, we can work, we can wear whatever we want right? We had many women before who fought for all of those "privileges", but are we safe? Are women around the globe safe? I can say for a fact that no we are not safe, walking down the street at night, depending on where you live can be one of the most dangerous things in the world, and also one of the deadliest. Especially because we're not seen by many as another human being, an equal, but as an object of lust, possession and desire. Women die every day from domestic violence, women are assaulted every day while going to the grocery store or work, we can be wearing short skirts or dresses or may be covered up and wearing sweatpants, it doesn't really matter, we'll still not be safe, because most men don't see us as worthy of their respect, they see us as if we were below them, bound to listen and obey and fulfill their needs.

Why did I take the time to make this post? Well, one particular and personal event pushed me to write it, when you're followed by a stranger in a car from the moment you get out of the bus till you're reaching home during a 5 minute walk, you again realize that almost nothing has changed, and that even though in 21st century you can vote, study, drive a car and work, you're still not safe from men that will do you harm just because you're a woman.

So next time you decide to judge a woman, the next time you men dare say we get things easy think again, think twice, three times, because that it's not the case.
