Chapter 8.

The next morning Thomaz and Hannah, woke up, groggily walking into the nursery, Hannah noticing first the babies were not in their cradles. Hannah called out for the wet nurse who came running. “Where are my babies, do you have them?”

The wet nurse panicked, “No my lady, they were here sleeping…” The wet nurse cut herself short as she noticed the cradles were empty. Thomaz’s temper now flaring, he gripped the wet nurse by the throat and screamed in her face, when he received no answer he threw her across the room, her back slamming into a dressing unit as her neck whipped back with a loud crack, she slumped to the floor.

Vivi heard the commotion and ran down the corridor. On seeing the wet nurse slumped against the unit he checked her pulse by holding her wrist, she was dead. “My King there are things we can do to search, but first the palace must be locked down, and the city too.”

The king looked Vivi deep in his eyes, and then gave the command, he ordered the full garrison to guard all exits, no one in and no one out under any circumstances.

The King pushed Vivi against the wall, pinning him, his arm across the base of Vivi’s neck. “Do you know of a spell… something to trace the last steps?”

Vivi thought, his mind racing, then it came to him… “Yes my liege, it will be difficult but there is something I might be able to do…”

“Difficult, why?” The King spat.

“Because, my liege, I am not bonded with a dragon.” This last comment stung Thomaz, his throat went dry.

“Do whatever you can” The king growled, moving his arm away from Vivi’s neck, Vivi momentarily dropping to one knee gasping for air.

Thomaz hugged his wife, tried to reassure her but failed, she slapped him across the face laying all the blame on him.

“It’s these times when one wishes Braiden and Zeindaryys were still alive.” Vivi stood up brushing himself up, he saw Julia stood in the hallway staying out of Thomaz’s way. “Julia, I need some flour please, and plenty of it” Julia nodded and rushed off to find the flour.

Vivi walked over to the cradles, closed his eyes, stretched his arms out wide, bringing them together with a soft clap, his little fingers and index fingers next to the thumbs folded over, a soft orange aura started to envelop him. “mi vidu, kio estis, tio foriris”

A soft orange silhouette of the babies appeared in the crib, but for a brief moment and then disappeared. Vivi looked at the cribs, “Malkaŝi magion uzatan antaŭ nelonge” A wisp of green smoke appeared, with no defining features, the green smoke moved from the cradles, down there sides, across the floor, through the doorway and into the corridor and then disappeared, showing the final phase the green smoke took the shape of a small ball. The noticed, shocked but with intrigue, he followed the green smoke, Hannah close behind.

“The green smoke ball… a summoning item… something was summoned… to take the prince and princess away…” Vivi said stammering. “This kind of magic hasn’t been seen since I was a child.”

The king knowing full well that Elves can live long lives simply asked. “And how long ago was that?”

“My liege that would be a hundred years past, since I stepped foot on these shores. I must bid for your permission to temporarily take leave, I need to check something personally.”

“To do what Vivi? I need you here!”

“To get answers, I must check something personally in the vaults of the Elves.” The king hesitated, but Hannah snatched up a writ of permission from her chamber and shoved it into Vivi’s chest, without saying a word she pointed to the door. Vivi bowed and quickly left.

Exiting the palace he saw a soldier's horse and jumped into the saddle and galloped through the city, on reaching the portcullis the guards crossed there lances, Vivi showed them his writ, and they let him through. Vivi travelled hard for three days straight, until he reached the end of the forest, he came across Meera waiting for him in her Elven form this time wearing a long loose tunic.

“Well met Meera, the vault of artifacts, is it secure?”

Meera simply nodded her head, and pointed to the group of oak trees, a few feet inside the forest. Vivi walked up to them and looked around, his eyes flashed orange, and he saw for himself that everything was intact, the invisible traces of the ancient language wards all locked, sealed and unbroken.

He looked back at Meera, “A green orb was used to summon a magic unseen in this land, but seen in ours. The kind that cost us dearly in the annals of our time Meera.”

“Then mine cousin, you must ask that of directness in our language to reveal all, no politeness, but demand. You know our language to be fickle, but the truth it cannot hide” Came the soft lilting voice from behind the trees, the high elf, the voice of reason and of authority, a voice he’d not heard for many many years.

“My dear cousin!” Vivi exclaimed, looking at her in her fine light blue regal attire, the azure circlet adoring her head. “You still have a way of making an appearance!” Vivi embraced his cousin, “I’m sorry it’s been so long.”

“Speak not of it, Ser Vivi!” She replied, mocking him lightly. “The green orb is that of dark magic, very unkind and unjust. It surprises not that all weren’t found, but who could possess such a thing on this continent I know not. We must be wary, and cautious of snakes in the grass Vivi”

“Yes, yes indeed. Could you have someone search and seek? Something like this cannot, must not be dismissed. If it’s a human dappling in the dark arts the consequences would be dire.” Vivi looked at the falling sun, “I’ve been gone for too long already. I must go.”

“Yes, and cousin remember, demand in our words, for the answers you seek.”

Vivi nodded, running and then jumping in the saddle of the horse, he reared and charged back towards the king’s residence.

“Five days… five fucking days, where is the damn elf…” Thomaz screamed angrily, a guard came rushing forward…

“My king, he's back, coming in fast!”

The king rushed forward, to the entrance of the palace, in which he saw Vivi deftly jumping from the saddle of the horse. “Vivi you best have fucking answers!” Thomaz snarled.

“To the nursery my king, we must go, I will need that flour now, Julia.” Julia smiled and nodded softly to Vivi as she came forward from behind a pillar in the main hall. Thomaz on the other hand snarled and pushed everyone out of his way as they made their way back to the nursery. He ordered the guards conserving the room to step aside.

Julia appears carrying a large bowl of flour, “scatter the flour on the cradles, on to the floors, and into the hallway. Vivi took a deep breath. Once again he threw his arms out wide, bringing them together this time with a loud clap, a strong orange aura enveloped him, his eyes flashing bright orange. The king stumbled backwards in shock

“Nun mi petegas vin, ke vi montru al mi magian pasintecon, malkaŝu al mi, tion mi postulas, montru al mi magian esencon!” Vivi’s voice had changed, becoming strong and authoritative. The flour changed turned and contorting from white to orange, to black, to green and yellow, from the hallway a green orb appeared from which two green and yellow snakes appeared, slithering along the floor, in to the nursery, creeping up the legs of the cradles, coiling around the newborn babies, before swallowing them whole, and then disappearing into a red and black wispy smoke. Then everything went back to normal, the king frozen in shock, tears streaming down his face, as Vivi fell forward onto his knees and vomited on the floor.

There was a deafening silence, like a calm before the storm. Then suddenly the king broke out of his state of shock as Hannah wailed behind him. Julia moved forward quickly to try and console Hannah, taking her back to the queen's chambers.

Anger and rage flashed from the king, “Vivi, WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!”

Vivi coughed, trying to clear his throat, still feeling the taste of vomit in his throat. “Th-that was the essence of magic, what you saw was the essence revealing itself, to show what had happened past. I’m… I’m sorry I didn’t know it would be that… revealing my lord.”

“Can you find out who did it? Who used that magic?”

“No, my lord, that was dark, dark magic, such as that should never, ever be used. It has a way of hiding the caster, only a dragon would be able to help reveal all.”

“There are no more dragons?”

“I must apologise my lord, it is believed that Zeindarrys the Swift was the last..”
