The Journey, Chapter 6

Chapter 7

Rubian rolled a small green orb between his fingers, smoothly with such grace and dexterity, making it disappear and reappear as we walked up and down the corridors of the palace. He wasn’t in the mood for taking part in the celebrations for the birth of the twins, his King and Queen’s newborn children.

The celebrations were loud and vibrant, the whole city joining in with the celebrations, mountains of gifts piled up, just for the new parents.

That didn’t make things better for Rubian though, still rolling the little green orb between his fingers, “What animal… What animal?” He muttered underneath his breath.

Vivi was at his rightful place at this moment in time, standing on the right hand side of the king. He watched the celebrations with a faint smile on his face, his first experience at such an event. The Lady Julia was seen walking around filtering between the throngs of important people and dignitaries, politely making conversation.

Not much was known to Vivi about Lady Julia, just an obvious disliking between her and the king. The evil glares they shared with each other could slice a dragon in half Vivi thought to himself, he gave himself a soft smile, as he remember the very first time he met Braiden and Zeindaryys, Vivi had got knocked out cold during a battle, Zeindaryys the Swift took it upon himself to grab Vivi in his talons, fly over a lake and drop Vivi into the middle of it.

The king noticed Vivi smiling to himself, “You have a memory to share ,Ser Vivi?” The question itself took Vivi by surprise. “Just a memory of a time long gone my King” It seemed the King was going to press further but was then distracted by two small adult looking people who had just entered the banquet hall, Vivi looked down the room and watched these two stoic child sized adults walk forward carrying a medium sized chest. “Dwarves?” Vivi said surprised. The crown in attendance went quiet as King Thomaz stood up, as if to get a better look.

The Dwarves stood before the king, placing the chest carefully on the floor and then bowed low. “King Thomaz, my name be Althor, son of the Dwarven King, Balthor.” He bowed low once again, Althor had refined features for a dwarf, he had long dark ginger hair, with a long dark plaited beard that was tucked into his belt, his clothes were dark green with a light blue cape. The other dwarf had dark hair, his beard dark and greying also in a short plait, was wearing grey clothes with a light brown cape, stayed silent, but bowed when Althor did.

The king looked at the silent dwarf, Althor noticed. “Mine apologies King, this be Reagan, lost his voice he did, mountain goat… nasty business, nasty!” Said Althor shaking his head. “We come but in humble peace and offer ye congratulations for the birth yer children, may their lives be long and prosperous.” The king nodded as a courtesy, still baffled as to why the dwarves were here, Althor nodded to Reagan, who opened up the chest, “Diamonds, Ruby’s, Sapphires, Emeralds, Opals, Amethyst, Tourmaline, Moonstone and Onyx gemstones… may I, on behalf of mine King, offer this chest of gemstones as a sign of respect and congratulations.”

The King’s eyes went wide with wonder, as the candle light flickered on the gemstones casting an array of colourful reflections all over the place. “Th-thank you Prince Althor.” The king stuttered, the queen placed a reassuring hand on his shoulders. The king looked back at his queen, then to his babies, then back at the dwarves. “Prince Althor, Reagan, please join us and have a drink with us.”

Vivi offered the dwarves a goblet each filled with mead, the king raised his own to the dwarves and they drank. The dwarves joined, the king at his table and told him stories about the dwarven mountains. Althor made eye contact with Vivi, Althor carefully moved his head in the direction of a window, Vivi followed his line of sight, and noticed a small swallow sitting on the open window frame. Vivi discreetly nodded to Althor to say he understood. Slowly standing up, Vivi went to walk away but the king grabbed his arm and asked where he was going to which Vivi curtly replied, “My king, even an elf such as I, needs to relieve his bowels every once in a while.” The king laughed out and nodded his head, waving his hand telling the elf to go.

Vivi walked to the back of the room and exited from a hidden side door, the swallow discreetly flying to the elf and landing on his shoulder. With a whispered tweet in his ear, the swallow quickly filled him in on what had been happening in the last few months. Walking into his chambers he whispered an incantation in the ancient language, a small faint orange mist appeared enveloping the room, and it went quiet. With a tweet and a flutter of small wings the swallow flew behind a changing board, there was a poof of magenta smoke and a small naked woman appeared from behind the board. She had long dark brown hair that went to the smalls of her back just above her waist, with blue eyes, she was very slim and elegant.

“Master Vivi, blessings be with you.” Her voice was very sweet, soft and melodic like that of the swallow.

“We don’t have much time Meera, what is it that’s known of the prophecy, is there any truth to it?”

“Yes, there is plenty of truth.” Meera glanced around the room tracing her fingers over some of the furnishings. “A male child will be born. This child will be formidable, with a unique power of the ancient language, such as that has never been seen before. He will be strong against the enemy, and reunite the races. That however is all that was foreseen in the prophecy, the elf Queen confirms it as such…”

The celebrations die down, and everyone starts to go home, the dwarves Althor and Reagan bow to the king and queen, and take their leave. Rubian finally makes his presence known to the king and queen, Crossing his leg behind his ankle he bows low congratulating them, the king pats Rubian on the back with a smile.

Vivi and Meera finish their conversation, with a poof of magenta smoke she changes back into a swallow, and flies out of the window that Vivi opens up for her, disappearing into the night.

The prince and princess were now asleep in their cradles in the nursery, the King and Queen fast asleep next door.

In the dark of the night, the palace in silence, no sound to be heard. Rubian placed the small green orb on the floor, “Sly and cunning though you be, do my bidding as I humbly set you free!” He whispered, a few moments later the orb faintly rattles and then starts to contort, two dark green snakes with yellow bellies and red eyes start to appear, the snakes so long, the elongated bodies coiled until their heads were raised, beady red eyes staring at Rubian swaying side to side, then they sudden whip their heads foreword snapping at Rubian “Not me you slithery bastards… in there, go, do as your told!”

The snakes turn, and slowly slither underneath the door into the nursery, there bodies coiling around the legs of the cradles as they climb in side them, coiling around the soundly sleeping babies, opening their mouths wide and swallowing the babies whole, a few moments later the snakes glowed red and orange, and disintegrated in a black wispy smoke.
