Chapter 16: Learning
“Right, now child, you must listen. To speak in the ancient language, the language of the Elves is to understand the very being of the words said. Every word in the ancient language has power. Those who speak this language cannot lie. Do you understand?”
Nekonata nodded, years had gone by and now as a young boy his learning, or schooling as Vivi called it had begun. First was writing letters and numbers, in human language, Elvish language and Dwarven. Thick black letters in scrolling parchment, Vivi called it Calligraphy, but Nekonata called it boring.
When Vivi wasn’t available it was up to Young Timtur to teach him. Timtur was in his human form, an elf that had decided upon changing his Elvish features so he looked like a squirrel, always startled when Vivi asked him to do the lessons for the day… “Master Vivi, as you wish, as long as it doesn’t hug me again!”
“Neko!” Timtur snaps his fingers! “Concentrate, hold your hand out, and say Fajro!” A small ball of blue fire appeared on the squirrel elf’s hand, it changed from a ball to a square and then a triangle before disappearing. “Now, you try!”
Neko held his hand out as instructed, “Fajro!” A small purple flame flickered and then went out, he looked at Timtur confused.
“You have to mean the word you say, focus on the word in your mind, breathe in then when you say the word breath out, say it like you mean it!”
Nekonata shrugged his shoulders, he focused, breathed in, then breathed out “FAJRO!” Suddenly a large purple ball of fire sprang forth, the ferocity of the flame made Neko jump causing the purple ball of fire to out of his hand hitting Vivi’s favourite chair, setting it ablaze.
Timtur jumped up in shock, “Akvo!” Cried out the elf dosing the chair with water.
Neko walked up, standing beside him, with a casual shrug of his shoulders “Vivi’s not gonna be happy with you!”
Timtur covered his face with his hands sighing heavily, “Let's take this outside!” He said putting a hand on the child's shoulder guiding him into the courtyard. “Okay, so that was a little disastrous but now at least you know what it entails… instead of screaming the word, try saying it a little more calmly, if you will.” Timtur signalled for him to try again.
Neko once again, focused on the word, he breathed in, then breathed out, “Fajro!” A small ball of purple fire appeared.
“Good, very good. Now think of shapes, keep it simple!”
Neko thought of a square, ‘Come on, from ball to square, come on, come on’ Slowly but surely it changed from a fireball to a rough square… Then a few moments later from square into a triangle. Neko jumped up in celebration. “Yes! I did it, I did it!” The purple fire-triangle left the palm of his hand as he jumped in celebration flying into the air and hitting a tree branch just above his head setting it on fire. “Umm… oops!” He said looking up.
Vivi walked forward laughing, “Akvo!” He said calmly as water the colour of orange shot from his hand dosing the purple flames. “Well done Nekonata, well done!”
“Master Vivi, Timtur’s magic is blue, yours is orange, and mine is purple… Why?”
Vivi coughs politely, “Well that would be to do with our aura, everyone has an aura, especially those that can do magic. The colour of one's aura can come from heritage, or one's aura can be defined from a certain act that that person once did. In the extreme’s of circumstances one's aura can also change, although that is very rare.”
“Hmm…” In deep thought for a few moments, Neko looks to Timtur and then back to Vivi, “I don’t want my aura to change, I like purple.”
Vivi smiled, “Lessons are over for today, but at every available chance you get, you must practice your magic.”
“Yes Master Vivi, I will, I promise!” Neko runs towards Timtur, he bows, showing a sign of respect. Timtur bows in return. Then suddenly Neko hugs Timtur tightly around the waist.
“Oh, for crying out loud it’s hugging me again!” Timtur cries out.
“Go child, go. Wash up and get your dinner.” Said Vivi laughing. Neko bows to Vivi and runs off. “Young Timtur, you really must stop calling him ‘it’. You know as well as I do that he actually out ranks us all.”
Timtur watches as Neko shoves his face in a bowl of water, then shakes his head flinging water droplets everywhere, he looks over to Vivi giving him a big thumbs up before running off into the kitchen. “I know Master Vivi, a force of habit, I’m afraid. He’s growing up fast.”
“Well now he’s got the basic contortion of magic down, he needs to strengthen his mind, and practice his swordsmanship and bowmanship skills. I have a feeling he will excel in those fields.”
“Master Vivi, please please please don’t make me teach him those skills, he’s a disaster!”
“And if I remember rightly, so were you at first Young Timtur! But no, I will have Jason and Patrick teach him those skills, they are better suited for that task.”
Vivi see’s Meera the swallow flying towards him. He raises his hand for her to land on it, and then lifts her close to his shoulder so she can climb on to it.
“There are rumours of dragon eggs in the citadel. King Thomaz isn’t happy about these rumours. Rubian is up to his slimy tricks again and lying about some kind of ambush near the Eastern Outpost at the foot of the mountains.”
Vivi looked at Meera intently, “This is the first I’ve heard of dragon eggs!” Vivi walks through the courtyard heading towards the kitchens. “If there are truly dragon eggs they need to be protected. The only person I can think of that would know anything about them is my daughter.”
Suddenly in the middle of the kitchen doorway there is a poof of magenta smoke as Meera suddenly transforms into her normal self, naked. “For crying out loud Meera!” Vivi whispered, shocked. “Not where eyes can see!” He quickly whipped off his cloak and wrapped it around Meera’s frame.
“Elvina is here?” She asked with doleful eyes.
