Chapter 14, Home.
Some months later Vivi arrived at Edena Village, at the bottom of the Termini Cliffs far east, and many many leagues away from the citadel. Nekonata, going through the motions of growing caused Vivi a few problems along the way, it was clear that the child did like green vegetables, something that Vivi found hilariously funny that is until he was vomited all over.
Nekonata was growing, and was healthy. Although stubborn, and prone to throwing a strop when he was hungry everything was fine and well.
“Well child, this here is Edena Village, your new home. A place you will be safe in, for now at least.” Said Vivi in a soft voice as a young man named Cole ran forward to take the veins of Vivi’s steed. Nekonata mumbled and cooed.
Vivi dropped from his steed and walked into the annex of a cathedral, in which he found Meera the Swallow in her human form sat on a chair reading a tome. “Well met Master Vivi,” she chirped. Vivi nodded, as he placed the child in a cradle in the middle of the room. “I trust there wasn’t… many problems on your journey?”
Vivi rolled his eyes at Meera who laughed a tweety chirpy kind of laugh. “Oh how you know so Meera! But well met my friend. Thank you for being our watcher, I’m sure Neko appreciates it.”
Meera nodded with a soft smile as she looked over the cradle to see the baby properly for the very first time. “He’s adorable isn’t he, he’s definitely going to grow up to be a heartbreaker!” She chirped.
“I’d very much rather hope not Meera, there’s been far too many of those already.” Vivi said with a soft chuckle. “He’s got a lot to learn.” Suddenly Nekonata’s eyes flashed purple as an unexpected commotion started outside. There was a loud snarling growl and shouting from the Edena soldiers. “Stay here with the child Meera!” Vivi walked out into the courtyard, and saw soldiers blocking the path of a very large grey wolf with one brown eye and one blue eye. “BASTIAN! My friend, my heavens, it's been a long time!” Vivi exclaimed, walking quickly to the wolf and pressing his head against his friends. The soldiers quietly apologised and moved away.
Vivi and Bastian took no notice, they walked inside the annex together, Bastian sniffing the air walked up to the cradle, and then wrinkled his nose, moving away quickly. “It smells… foul!” He said in a soft growl. Nekonata’s eyes flashed purple again, and a squirrel fell from one of the beams in the roof landing in the cradle, the baby managed to grab it before the squirrel ran, hugging it tightly and falling to sleep.
Vivi and Meera look at each other and burst out laughing. Bastian looks at the pair of them with his head tilted to the side. It took a few moments for the two elves to calm down and recompose themselves.
“It looks like our friend young Timtur is going to be stuck for a while” Vivi says still chuckling. Bastian now understanding the situation shakes his head while rolling his eyes at the pair.
“Now Bastian, my friend, to what do I owe your visit?”
The wolf sits on its haunch, “Well, isn’t a wolf allowed to visit a friend?” He asks with a wolfish grin. “You wanted a report next time you were in the area… and your scent is not an easy one to forget…” The wolf looks around, his keen eyes flexing at the beams of the room. “There are people of an unsavory kind walking around, I know not of what they are, they look human and dwarven all at the same time. They are cocky and sly and bold. They are clever like humes but moved deftly like dwarves.”
Vivi walks back and forth pacing. “They must be the humarf’s. The offspring of human and dwarf relationships. Have they made any moves? Where have they made home?”
“They’ve made a home in the Maragort Caverns to the North and West of the cliffs. They’ve made no move yet not against us, but against a curious tribe of strange coloured elves that were passing through on the trade route.”
Vivi nodded his head in thought. “Thank you Bastian, for the report, it’s great to see you again after so long. Now tell me, how is Convel?”
Bastian perked up excited for this conversation. Him and Vivi spoke into the long hours of the night trading stories here and there.
Nekonata woke up, his eyes flashed purple, so bright that the room lit up, Bastian’s ears flickered, as a group of Elves charged into the city, looking haggard and drawn, visible injuries there bodies and mounts. Bastian growled, Vivi jumped to his feet, and looked out of the window, as he watched one of the elves fall from their horse, collapsing onto the floor, Vivi pushed through the throng of curious onlookers… “Well don’t just stand there, get the healers now!” A soldier ran from the crowd to awaken the healers. Vivi went to help the fallen elf.
“It’s ok young one, you are safe here.” Vivi said softly. The elf opened their eyes, they were a light green, and Vivi recognised her, her name was Elvina.
“Elvina… my love, what happened?” Vivi asked softly, concerned.
“You promised… not to say… my love… again…” She mumbled softly
