A country's 'national anthem' is a musical medium that usually sings about the country's history, culture and patriotism. The country is recognized either by government or by tradition. It is sung on official or unofficial or military occasions.

In the 19th century, national anthems became popular in many European countries. The Dutch national anthem “Het Wilhelmus” is perhaps the oldest national anthem of all. It was written between 1568 – 1572 during the 80 Years War.

The Japanese national anthem “Kimi ga Yo” was written during the Kamakura period but was not set to music until 1880. U.K. The national anthem "God Save the Queen" was first performed in 1745 (then as "God Save the King").

Spain's national anthem "Marcha Real" (The Royal March) has been in use since the 1770s. The national anthem of France “La Marseillaise” was written in 1792. It was adopted as the national anthem in 1795. In the 19th and 20th century, almost all countries adopted some song as their national anthem. A national anthem may be recognized either by a country's constitution, or by law, or by tradition...

Most of the national anthems are in the popular language of that country. The Indian national anthem is in Bengali, a Sanskrit word.

Switzerland has four national anthems in each of the four main languages.

South Africa's national anthem is unique in that four of the country's 11 official languages are used in their anthem. A monologue has one section (verse).

There are no words in the national anthem of Spain in different languages. There is only music. But in 2007 a competition was held to compose words to the music.
