According to A Dictionary of Colour: A Lexicon of the Language of Colour, the color was definitely named after the fruit.

The first known use of “Orange” as a color in the English language dates back to 1512.

We know that in 1493, Christopher Columbus planted orange trees on Hispaniola - so it’s clear that the knowledge of the fruit must have existed (at least in Europe) before the color was named.
