This year, Holika Dahan will be celebrated on March 17. It is the day of the full moon of the Phalgun month​

Holi is here and we can't help but get excited about it. The much-awaited festival is celebrated with a lot of zeal across the country. Holika Dahan or Choti Holi is a major part of this festival. This traditional ritual involves the burning of an effigy of a mythical demoness named Holika. It is an important ritual that precedes Holi. It is celebrated on the full moon night of the Phalgun month, according to the Hindu calendar. According to mythology, it's a way of celebrating Lord Vishnu's act of vanquishing Holika
A Holika Dahan mantra is chanted while burning a bonfire dedicated to this ceremony. Devotees honour and pray to the spirit of Holika in order to maintain peace and happiness. The prayers are concluded by walking around the bonfire three, five, or seven times along with vessels of water. Then, devotees empty the vessels when the last circuit is complete.
After the Holika Dahan bonfire ritual, tilaks are smeared on the foreheads of devotees. Baked or roasted crops of the season are eaten. Certain devotees also carry some Holika ash to their homes as it is thought to be an auspicious practice

Holika was the sister of King Hiranyakashipu and the aunt of Prahlad. Hiranya wanted prahlad to worship him instead of Lord vishnu.
His son Prahlad disagreed with his father, and refused to worship his father as a god. He continued believing and worshipping Lord Vishnu.

This made Hiranyakashipu very angry and he made various attempts to kill Prahlad. During a particular attempt on Prahlad's life, King Hiranyakashipu called upon his sister Holika for help. Holika had a special cloak garment that prevented her from being harmed by fire. Hiranyakashipu asked her to sit on a bonfire with Prahlad, by tricking the boy to sit on her lap. However, as the fire roared, the garment flew from Holika and covered Prahlad. Holika burnt to death, Prahlad came out unharmed.

Holika Dahan, also known as Choti Holi, is one of the most significant festivals celebrated by the Hindus. फाल्गुन मास की पूर्णिमा के दिन होली मनाई जाती है और शाम के समय शुभ मुहूर्त के अनुसार होलिका दहन किया जाता है. धार्मिक मान्यता है कि भगवान विष्णु के भक्त प्रहलाद को हिरण्यकश्यप ने होलिका की गोद में बैठाकर जिंदा जलाने की कोशिश की थी. और इस दौरान होलिका खुद ही जल कर खत्म हो गई थी. उस दिन फाल्गुन मास की पूर्णिमा थी. तभी से होलिका दहन किया जाता है.


होलिका दहन बुराई पर अच्छाई की जीत के प्रतीक के रूप में किया जाता है. इस बार होलिका दहन 17 मार्च और होली 18 मार्च के दिन मनाई जाएगी. होलिका दहन के समय कुछ चीजों को ध्यान रखना बेहद जरूरी है. इस दिन भूलकर भी ये गलतियां न करें. ऐसा करने से व्यक्ति के जीवन में कई तरह की समस्याएं पैदा हो सकती हैंहोली का दहन भक्त प्रहलाद की याद में मनाया जाता है। भगवान श्रीकृष्ण के काल में इस त्योहार से रंग जुड़ गया और इसे उत्सव की तरह मनाया जाने लगा। आओ जानते हैं भक्त प्रहलाद की कथा।


एक बार असुरराज हिरण्यकशिपु विजय प्राप्ति के लिए तपस्या में लीन था। मौका देखकर देवताओं ने उसके राज्य पर कब्जा कर लिया। उसकी गर्भवती पत्नी को ब्रह्मर्षि नारद अपने आश्रम में ले आए। वे उसे प्रतिदिन धर्म और विष्णु महिमा के बारे में बताते। यह ज्ञान गर्भ में पल रहे पुत्र प्रहलाद ने भी प्राप्त किया। बाद में असुरराज ने ब्रह्मा के वरदान से तीनों लोकों पर विजय प्राप्त कर ली तो रानी उसके पास आ गई। वहां प्रहलाद का जन्म हुआ


बाल्यावस्था में पहुंचकर प्रहलाद ने विष्णु-भक्ति शुरू कर दी। इससे क्रोधित होकर हिरण्यकशिपु ने अपने गुरु को बुलाकर कहा कि ऐसा कुछ करो कि यह विष्णु का नाम रटना बंद कर दे। गुरु ने बहुत कोशिश की किन्तु वे असफल रहे। तब असुरराज ने अपने पुत्र की हत्या का आदेश दे दिया। ।



उसे विष दिया गया, उस पर तलवार से प्रहार किया गया, विषधरों के सामने छोड़ा गया, हाथियों के पैरों तले कुचलवाना चाहा, पर्वत से नीचे फिंकवाया, लेकिन ईश कृपा से प्रहलाद का बाल भी बांका नहीं हुआ। तब हिरण्यकशिपु ने अपनी बहन होलिका को बुलाकर कहा कि तुम प्रहलाद को लेकर अग्नि में बैठ जाओ, जिससे वह जलकर भस्म हो जाए।



होलिका को वरदान था कि उसे अग्नि तब तक कभी हानि नहीं पहुंचाएगी, जब तक कि वह किसी सद्वृत्ति वाले मानव का अहित करने की न सोचे। अपने भाई की बात को मानकर होलिका भतीजे प्रहलाद को गोदी में लेकर अग्नि में बैठ गई।


उसका अहित करने के प्रयास में होलिका तो स्वयं जलकर भस्म हो गई और प्रहलाद हंसते हुए अग्नि से बाहर आ गया। इसलिए होली पर्व मनाते समय वास्तविक भाव को ध्यान में रखकर होली दहन करें।


इसके लिए फिर आप चाहे तो विगत वर्षों के बुरे अनुभवों और असफलताओं को एक कागज पर लिखकर अग्नि को समर्पित कर दें। अपने मन में चल रहे नकारात्मक भावों को होली दहन में डाल दें। तभी आप भी सकारात्मकता सोच से आगे बढ़ते हुए प्रहलाद की तरह ईश कृपा के पात्र बन जाएंगे।
