Mohammed Rafi (Born: 24th December, 1924 at Kotla Sultan Singh, Amritsar, Punjab. Died: 31st July, 1980 at Mumbai) – Mohammad Rafi was a noted playback singer in the Indian cinema world. He is considered as one of the greatest and most influential singers of the Indian subcontinent. Mohammed Rafi got the education of singing from his childhood. In 1943, when Rafi was 16 years old, by the help of Shaym Sunder, he got a chance to sing a song in a Punjabi film. In 1945 he got an opportunity to sing in All India Radio, Lahore. Shyam Sunder who gave Rafi a chance to sing a Punjabi film, that Shyam brought Rafi to Mumbai and got him to meet the filmmakers of Mumbai and got a chance to sing a Duet Song in a Hindi film ‘Gaon Ki Gori‘ in 1945, which became Rafi’s first recorded song in a Hindi film. Rafi never stopped after this. He started singing as a duet singer in films with big singers of that time. But soon his voice started becoming popular. In 1949, he got the chance sing as solo singer in many films. All the songs of the film ‘Baiju Bawra‘ released in 1952 were sung by Mohammed Rafi, which became a huge musical hit, making Mohammed Rafi a star playback singer all over India. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Mohammad Rafi recorded over 28,000 songs in 11 Indian languages from 1944 to 1980.
