Ayudha Pooja is a hindu festival that is celebrated during Shardiya Navratri. Also known as ‘Astra Pooja’, it is the day when people cleanse and worship their instruments, weapons, machines, tools, vehicles, etc, that are an indispensable part of everyone’s livelihood.
Many of you might think that this is similar to Vishwakarma Pooja but Ayudha Pooja is performed on ‘Maha Navami’ or the ninth day of Navratri and has a beautiful mythological saga behind it.
History of Ayudha Pooja
There was a buffalo demon named Mahishasura. Due to the special boon granted to him by Lord Brahma that he can only be killed by a woman, he became very arrogant and started killing innocent people. He even forced all devtas (Gods) to leave heaven. All the gods then requested the trinity Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh to find out a solution to this. As per Brahma’s boon, only a woman could kill the demon but they all knew that a single woman would not be able to do it. Hence, they all decided to combine their powers to create a woman with special divine powers. It was then that with the powers and energy of the trinity, Goddess Durga was created. All the gods also gave their powers and weapons to her and she turned into a powerful Shakti.
After killing all the soldiers of his army, Durga entered into a battle with Mahishasure. The fierce battle between Goddess Durga and the demon lasted eight days and it was on the ninth day when Goddess Durga succeeded in putting his life to an end by killing him, hence she was called ‘Mahishasurmardini’.
The Goddesses which are worshiped on the day are ‘Saraswati – Goddess of Wisdom’, ‘Maa Lakshmi – Goddess of Wealth’, and ‘Maa Parvati- The divine Goddess of Motherhood’.

Rituals performed on Ayudha Pooja
To commemorate the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon and his army, devotees put their pivotal weapons in front of the goddess to seek her blessings and ask for protection from any evil.
The machines or tools are thoroughly cleansed; then a mixture of turmeric and sandalwood powder is prepared for the ‘Tilak’ to be placed on them. The machines, vehicles, and tools are intricately decorated with garlands, mango leaves, and flowers. There is also a very specific ritual of smashing a white pumpkin coated with turmeric in front of the vehicles to destroy all the negative energies around and thus harbor prosperity in the lives of the owners.
It is an undeniable truth that knowledge is one of the biggest weapons one can have. Interestingly, on this day, students also worship their books and study material and seek the blessings of Maa Saraswati for a brighter academic life.
