Gandhi Jayanti
Gandhi Jayanti is a celebration celebrated in India to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. It is celebrated on October 2 every year and is one of the three national holidays of India. On June 15, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly announced the adoption of a resolution that announced that October 2 would be celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence because he was a non-violent freedom fighter. He is also known as the "Father of the Nation" and subhaschandra bose gave him this title for his relentless struggles for independence.
Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated on October 2 every year. It is a national holiday celebrated in all states and territories. Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated with prayer services and tributes across India, including the Rajghat, the memorial of Gandhi in New Delhi. Popular activities include prayer gatherings, commemorative ceremonies in various cities by colleges, local government agencies and socio-political organizations. Gandhi Jayanti speech, painting, essay and Mahatma Gandhi quiz competitions will be held. On this day, awards are given to projects promoting a non-violent way of life in schools and society and to celebrate Gandhi's contribution to the Indian independence movement. Gandhi's favourite bhajan (Hindu devotional song), Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram, is usually sung in his memory. The statues of Mahatma Gandhi across the country are decorated with flowers and garlands, with some people refraining from consuming alcohol or eating meat on that day. Government buildings, banks and post offices remained closed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Swachh Bharat Mission on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti in 2014. The second phase of this started on Gandhi Jayanti in 2021.
