Dabbawalas are an integral part of Mumbai's bustling city life. Originating in the late 19th century during the British Raj, dabbawalas are essentially lunchbox deliverymen who transport homemade lunches from residences to workplaces using a complex and efficient system of coding and sorting. The word "dabbawala" itself translates to "one who carries a box."
Each day, these dabbawalas collect hundreds of lunchbox from homes, deliver them to offices and schools across the city, and return the empty containers back to the respective homes. What's fascinating about their system is its reliability and accuracy, achieved with minimal technology and largely through human coordination.
