Today is Tollywood late legendary actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao's 97th birth anniversary. He was one of the most successful actors of Tollywood and he starred in over 255 films. Many of his films broke records and set benchmarks for others. And even today, his fans remember him for his work in the showbiz.

Nageshwara Rao is regarded as one of the most prominent figures ever seen in the history of Indian cinema. In his career spanning over seven decades, the filmmaker made sure that he provides infrastructural support to the Telugu film industry. With his efforts, he changed the face of Tollywood.

Late legendary actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao, who is popularly known as ANR, was born on September 20, 1923, in Ramapuram. Today marks the 97th birth anniversary of one of the finest actors Nageswara Rao who died at the age of 90 in 2013 due to stomach cancer.

Akkineni Nageswara Rao carved a niche for himself in the Indian film industry. ANR often played a second lead to Sr NTR who was at the peak of his career then. He started his career in 1941 and made a mark on the silver screen with critically-acclaimed performance in different genre films. He is best known for his classic roles in 1949’s Keelu Gurram, 1953’s Devadasu, 1956’s Tenali Ramakrishna, 1957’s Mayabazar, 1962’s Gundamma Katha and to name a few. The actor became the biggest rage in town.


Akkineni Nageswara Rao has been the recipient for many awards such as Filmfare, National Film Award and Nandi Award too. He was conferred by the Government of India with the Padma Shri title, the fourth highest civilian award in 1968. The actor also received the Padma Bhushan in 1988 and Padma Vibhushan in 2011. He was last seen in the 2014 film Manam, also starring Akkineni Nagarjuna, Akkineni Naga Chaitanya, Samantha, Shriya Saran and Akhil.
