The phone buzzed softly on the desk. A notification lit up the screen pulling Nida's attention. She glanced at it curiously. Her eyebrows lifting slightly.
A name appeared that tugged at a corner of her memory. Someone had sent her a friend request. She unlocked her phone and opened the app.
"Wait...is that..?" she murmured, her lips curling into a small smile. The name brought back a wave of nostalgia. "Oh! The topper guy from math tuition."
Without hesitation she accepted the request.
Days turned into weeks and then months , but the new connection remained dormant. No messages, no interactions. Nida forgot about it entirely, until one quiet evening when her phone buzzed again.
"Hey... "
Her heartbeat quickened slightly as she read the message. She typed back "Hello".
The conversation unfolded like the first few pages of a novel.
"How are you?"
"I'm good. Aren't you Rishabh from math tuition?"
"Yup. Do you know me?"
"Obviously, the topper guy." She added a winking emoji. Playful and light.
Rishabh chuckled on the other end. "To be honest, your name felt familiar, so I thought I’d message you."
Nida smirked at her phone, shaking her head slightly. "Oh really? My name felt familiar? Rishabh, my name isn’t exactly common. Don’t tell me it reminded you of someone else."
He laughed, caught. "Guilty as charged. It was just an excuse to start a conversation."
"Smooth," she replied with a small laugh.
"Anyway, what are you up to these days, Miss Nida?" he asked, quickly shifting the topic.
"In college, just like you," she replied.
Their words flowed like a stream, natural and easy. But something shifted, Nida's mood grew heavy, like a cloud passing over the sun.
Later that evening as she reread his messages something inside her twisted. She typed quickly, emotions spilling over:
"See don't text me anymore. I only talked to you because we knew each other. Now you are full on messaging me and it's too much."
Rishabh was caught off guard. His reply was immediate but hesitant.
"Sorry... I didn't mean to bother you. I won't disturb you again."
And just like that the fragile connection broke leaving both of them in the silence of their own thoughts. Nida wondering if she had been too harsh, and Rishabh retreating in his own quiet.
Sometimes paths cross and part just as quickly leaving behind a lingering "what if" in the air.
MONTHS LATER
Months passed but Nida occasionally found herself noticing his posts on her feed. A picture here, a witty caption there. Each one brought a flicker of memory. She couldn't shake the feeling that she might have been a little too harsh.
One fine evening as the sunset painted the sky in soft hues, Nida gave in to the nagging thought. She typed a message, hesitating for a moment before pressing send :
"Hello, you there?"
The reply almost came instantly, playful and casual.
"As always" he wrote adding a laugh.
Nida laughed too and replied," See I was a little harsh that day. I was just like, 'Ah, not again the usual not so good flirting and all.' So I kind of retreated suddenly. I hope you don't mind."
There was a pause. She wondered if her message had been a mistake. Then his reply popped up.
"Mind? Not at all. But I have to admit something, you’ve been on my mind more than I’d like to confess."
Nida hesitated before replying, "Oh? Why’s that?"
His answer was soft yet confident with a hint of vulnerability. "I didn’t know I made that kind of impression on you. But knowing I did... it feels kind of special."
Her cheeks flushed. She typed carefully trying not to overthink. "To be fair, you didn’t exactly try. It’s just... I noticed you back in tuition. You probably don’t remember me, but you were the topper guy everyone talked about. I thought reconnecting might be awkward, so I reacted impulsively."
His response came swiftly surprising with its honesty. "I didn't know you back then but I guess it's never too late, right? How about we start over— no pressure, just two people catching up?"
"That sounds good" Nida replied. A small smile tugging at her lips.
And just like that they turned the page to a new chapter. What started as a distant memory now felt like the beginning of something more. A connection that might finally get the chance to grow.
But every story has its twists, and theirs was just getting started.
